RsSandStone®

RsSandStone® is a product with special characteristics that allow it to be easily applied over knockdown textures, smoothing and leveling the wall or ceiling surface. The material’s translucent white coloration and anti-collapse formulation make it eminently suited for this purpose. The crushable sand-like aggregate is actually tiny hollow stones that allow the product to be utilized in a number of decorative ways. Similar to the other products in the Rs Series line, RsSandstone® can be mixed with RsActivator® to easily create unique, textured effects.

Product Tips
- Because of the hollow stones in RsSandstone, the product is ‘breathable’ and could retain water in outdoor applications. Interior use is best.
- RsSandstone can be thinned up to 20% with water.
- RsSandstone™ may be tinted with FauxCrème Color™ or FauxColor™. Because of the translucent nature of the product, very little tint is required.
- RsActivator™ may be added to RsSandstone™ in amounts varying from 5 – 10% for normal ‘pull-off’ finishes.
Basic Application
- Make sure that the surface is clean and free of grease, dust, etc. RsSandstone™ can be applied over Setcoat®, or any other good quality paint. Because the material will dry to a translucent finish, a solid base coat of a similar color may be desirable. When using the product in its untinted natural formulation, a neutral white base coat will achieve the best result.
- Apply a full coat of RsSandstone™ using a good quality stainless steel trowel. The depth of color will be determined by the depth of the texture. A subtle tonal color variation can be achieved by simply applying the product thicker in some areas and thinner in others. Unless the material is being used to smooth a pre-existing knockdown finish, for most decorative finishes an application of 1/8” will work well. RsSandstone™ can be applied in layers to achieve a finish of greater depth. This works especially well when using tinted RsSandstone™, building from a dark color to a light one.
- To simulate Cantera Stone (natural volcanic sandstone) create a mixture of RsGlaze™ 5-10% RsActivator™ and FauxCrème Color™. Trowel this mixture over the surface using the flat portion of the trowel and gentle pressure. The glaze will form irregular patterns. Using cheesecloth or paper towels blot out areas of the glaze to create a pattern of small jagged stones. Revisit these areas with the trowel, flattening the stones with light pressure. Once the pattern is complete allow the finish to dry thoroughly.
- The final layer consists of a skim coat of RsSandstone™. Carefully trowel a thin coat of RsSandstone™ over the surface, allowing it to build slightly in areas. Because of the translucent nature of the product, the glaze layer will still be noticeable creating the look of small colored stones embedded in the rock. The sand-like particles contained in the RsSandstone™ will add to the look of the finish. Let dry.
