FauxCrème®
$28.27
FauxCrème® (original formula) is a state-of-the-art glaze that is truly remarkable. This translucent glaze is slow drying, easily manipulated and far more controllable than any oil glaze, yet still imparts an impressive sense of realism to the finish. Most finishers recognize the quality of FauxCrème® at first glance and are always impressed by the richness and beauty that can be achieved. One of the most notable features of FauxCrème® when mixed with colorant, is its ability to retain the color identity of the tints, even when several different glaze mixtures are combined together on the wall. The sheerness of the glaze also allows the base color to be utilized in the finish, creating more depth. For a low-voc option, see LO-VOC FauxCrème®.
- To extend the drying time for FauxCréme® Clear, add small amounts of AquaExtender™ or SoSlow™ Super Extender; or apply a coat of plain FauxCréme® Clear to the wall, then work the colored glaze mixture over the top.
- Color-reactive finishes can be created using different ratios and applications of FauxCréme® Clear combined with Blending Solvent™ and/or Activator II™. For more information about these reactive additives, consult the specific product information sheet.
- The greater the amount of color pigment added to FauxCréme® Clear, the faster the glaze will dry. After a certain percentage of color has been added, the glaze mixture will be fully saturated. As a result, the addition of more colorant will not darken the glaze. It is better to build up the glaze layers in order to attain color intensity and depth, rather than attempt this operation in one application.
- It is important that the finish feel dry to the touch prior to top coating. Temperature and humidity will have an effect on the drying time of the glaze. If the finish feels tacky or cool to the touch, it is not dry. Under ideal drying conditions a 2 to 3 hour wait before top coating is the general rule. If applying any other Faux Effects® materials, wait overnight for the glaze to dry before proceeding.
- If blemishes or irregularities in the pattern are discovered after the glaze is dry, do not attempt to fix them by adding more glaze to the finish. At this point manipulating fresh glaze on top of the finish will re-hydrate the previous layer creating a halo/ring in that area. It is better to allow the glaze to fully dry, topcoat with ColorSeal™, let dry, and then add fresh glaze to the area.

- When attempting to do large areas, it is best to have assistance. Glazing large areas requires dividing the surface into manageable sections. Each section should be no larger than a full arm span. Create an organic flowing shape with glaze keeping within the sectioned borders. Do not form rigid squares or rectangles. Blot the finish and then feather the edges of the glaze until it is thin and pale. Moving along to the next section, apply a coat of glaze creating another organic shape and feather the edge into the previous area. This method will create a more natural flow on a large wall. Two feathered, overlapping layers will produce the same color density as the rest of the wall avoiding the creation of a dark lap line.

- Ensure the wall is clean and free of dust/grease. Apply 2 coats of SetCoat ® to seal the wall surface and prepare the wall for the FauxCréme® Clear glaze. SetCoat® is an important aspect of this finish, because it will allow the glaze the most open time and workability. Allow the final coat of SetCoat® to dry a minimum of 24 hours before glazing.
- Create a mixture of FauxCréme® Clear and FauxCréme® Color. FauxColor™ also may be used to tint FauxCréme® Clear. The normal ratio is 10% to 20% FauxCreme Color™ to 80% to 90% FauxCréme® Clear.
- Apply the tinted glaze(s) to the SetCoat® surface using a brush, roller or spray unit. After this step is complete, blot with crumpled plastic, cheesecloth or terry cloth, blending the colors and eliminating any application marks. Keep in mind, more absorbent blotting materials will remove more glaze during this process.
- At this point color blends and patterns have been established. The next step is to create visual texture. This can be achieved with a variety of tools and techniques such as rag rolling, dry brushing, badgering, bagging or activation.
- Allow the finish to dry thoroughly and bond with SetCoat®.
- When top coating sensitive glazes, always seal with a coat of ColorSeal™. If increased protection is required, follow with a more durable topcoat such as AquaGard™, C-500 Urethane™ or Varnish Plus™.
