Decorating with Kids: Easy DIY Projects

At Faux Masters, we’ve taught classes for years geared towards adults when it comes to color workshops, furniture finishing, plaster finishes and textures, and much more! But some of the adults that come to our classes have children that they would love to join in on the fun. So we thought we’d write up some ideas on DIY projects that are fun and easy to do at home with your kids because decorating with kids can be a fun, interactive weekend project for the whole family.

Child’s Play

In most homes, the kid’s room is the most imaginative. It’s a space where your child’s likes, hobbies, and favorite things can be displayed through the various paint and plasters that Faux Masters offers. Examine the space that you’re using and look carefully at the items in the room, to see what you can play with. Typically in a child’s room there are storage items like toy chests and drawer sets to store clothing, aside from a bed.

Toy Chests

Toy chests can be amusing to decorate because they are typically used daily by your children. If the toy chest is a solid color, use stencils to create fun patterns that you can paint onto the toy chest. The fun part for your child is, in picking the stencil design. Stencils are easy to find at any arts and crafts store and can come in an array of designs that will satisfy your child’s eye for design. Use one of our FauxCrème Colors™ like the Hi-Lite to make splash colors on the toy chest. This particular product is water resistance, which is great for any spills. All of our FauxCrème Colors™ be used alone or as a color additive that can be mixed with some of our other products. With toy chests, you want them to look as fun as the toys inside!

Drawer Sets

Drawer sets tend to be much larger than toy chests so there’s a little more creativity that can be displayed. For drawer sets, think about using them to enhance the space. Kids tend to like bright colors and images of their favorite heroes or cartoons. For the average person who isn’t an “artist” but dabbles in decorative paint; painting images of Spiderman, Dora the Explorer, and Pikachu can be quite difficult. However most stores carry large scale wall decals that are safe to apply to your child’s walls. Simply roll on 2 coats of SetCoat® and get to stickin!

The drawer sets can be used as an extension of the wall decals. For example if your child loves SpongeBob SquarePants, you can create an underwater world over the drawer sets with our FauxColor™ paint. To create the underwater look, use colors like Deep Blue and Forest Green. Our FauxColor™ produces sharp, clean colors that will help you best with your desired results. SpongeBob is fun to play around with because you can use actual sponges and yellow FauxColor™ paint to leave sponge marks all over the drawers. One of SpongeBob’s best pals, Patrick Star is easy to emulate using a starfish design that’s easy for your child to follow. Think of the fun they’ll have creating SpongeBob with actual sponges.

Walls

We talked briefly about using wall decals, but imagine using our decorative paints and plasters to change boring white walls to cool colors that your kids will love. Our Olde World Pigments™ remain true and vibrant, unlike other based tints that fade over time. These pigments come in 11 Olde World colors (like blue, yellow, orange, green, and more) and are the best choices for producing gorgeous, natural coloration. Let your child’s imagination run wild when it comes to pick the perfect color (or colors) for their walls.

Collaborative Painting

If walls are too large-scale to do as a project, we have something that’s easier for you and your child to work on. Create a collaborative painting. Encourage your child’s creativity by creating a collaborative painting together that you can frame and hang in their room. Our Designer Metallics™ is a water based decorative paint that is available in many designer colors. Choose from Charred Bronze, Charred Pearl, Charred Rouge, Charred Silver and more! The Designer Metallics™ create a beautiful and rich texture to any painting. Using multiple colors can turn a blank canvas into an easy masterpiece that you and your child will be pleased with.
