Venetian Gem® Base Coat

Venetian Gem® Base Coat is a versatile plaster formulated to produce professional custom decorative plaster finishes. Providing the decorative artist with a variety of options, this adaptable product may be used to create lightly or heavily textured surfaces. Venetian Gem® Base Coat is easily distressed and can be gently polished to create a classic high/low plaster look. Because it is tintable, it can be custom colored to produce layered single or multicolored finishes.

Product Tips
- Venetian Gem® Base Coat has good body and a fluffy texture which provides good coverage. Tint Venetian Gem® Base Coat with FauxCrème Color™ or Faux Color™. Do not add more than 8 oz. of colorant per gallon.
- Always make a sample to ensure the desired result.
- To distress, apply a full coat of Venetian Gem® Base Coat with a trowel. When the layer is ½ dry, pull and distress it with a clean trowel until the desired look has been obtained.
- There are a number of options for enhancing Venetian Gem® Base Coat in the final layer. Some suggestions are Venetian Gem® Finish Coat, Venetian Gem® Clear Gloss Coat, Venetian Gem® Hi-Lite, glazes, AquaWax™ or RsWaterWax®.
Basic Application
- Care should be taken to ensure that the base paint has bonded effectively with the substrate. Venetian Gem® Base Coat is heavy and as a result the finish could pull away from the wall if the base paint is not firmly attached to the underlying substrate. Two coats of SetCoat® is the preferred basecoat for this application; let the first coat dry at least 4 hours before applying the second coat—let the second coat dry a minimum of 24 hours.
- Apply a full coat of Venetian Gem® Base Coat over the entire surface using a flexible trowel. Normal air pitting and graceful trowel lines are permitted and will enhance the appearance of the finish in the later stages. A heavy first coat will take approximately 2 to 3 hours to fully dry. Light coats will dry in 30 minutes or less (depending on conditions). The material must be dry before applying additional coats, color enhancements or final protective layers.
- Apply additional layers of Venetian Gem® Base Coat in the same color or a new color mixture. Working in smaller sections, randomly apply the next coat, skipping sections. Add additional colors to fill in the missed areas on subsequent layers. Apply as many additional coats as desired.
- Scrape each coat lightly with a trowel or sand with 220-grit sandpaper.
- A final trowel scraping is performed by laying the trowel at a 45º angle and drawing it across the surface to produce the classic high/low polished plaster shine. This product will not achieve the same high polished shine as Venetian Gem® Plaster.

- Do not apply in temperatures under 55°F, or in damp, cold or humid conditions. Application in low temperatures reduces the ability of the product to achieve a good film formation resulting in limited durability.
